Collaborative Elk Webcam Goes Live
Gaylord, MI - The Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau, in partnership with the Otsego County Commission on Aging (OCCOA) and the City of Gaylord, are bringing elk viewing right to the comfort of your own home. This community partnership came together as the City was finalizing the last details of their new Elk View Park and the previous webcam to view elk from was no longer operational.
“In a tourism study conducted in 2017, we learned that approximately 60% of visitors to the area participate in elk viewing,” Christy Walcott, director of marketing and communications for the Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau explained. “Elk viewing is a highlight not only for visitors, but locals as well. It’s a pastime we’ve all enjoyed in Gaylord and many people want to hold on to that experience and share it with others.”
The Tourism Bureau previously shared the webcam supplied by CommunO2 in partnership with the OCCOA on their website. As that equipment was no longer in use, with the cooperation of the OCCOA and the City of Gaylord, a new webcam was installed closer to the viewing platform and feeding area completed this summer.
“The OCCOA’s willingness to partner with us made an excellent opportunity to showcase the City’s recent expansion of Elk View Park. Cutting Edge Computers did the installation and set up for us, utilizing resources on the OCCOA property and new structures put up by the City. This location gives those tuning in from home a great view of the elk as they walk throughout the enclosure and linger at the feeding area.”
The elk cam can be viewed from the Tourism Bureau’s website at gaylordmichigan.net, the OCCOA at otsegocountycoa.org or the City of Gaylord at cityofgaylord.com.
