Investing in Health: Nurse Practitioner Joins HDNW to Strengthen Care Access
To support the health of residents while improving access to public health care, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is adding a new nurse practitioner, René Straub.
“The health and well-being of our community is our top priority,” says Shannon Klonowski, HDNW Health Officer. “This new position is an investment in our ability to provide public health services to our residents, while meeting their health needs, and ultimately, creating a healthier future for our community.
” Straub brings over two decades of healthcare experience. Beginning her career as a Registered Nurse in the U.S. Navy, she continued her education and earned a Master of Science in Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner license in 2008.
Straub has a strong foundation in reproductive health. At HDNW, she will provide a full range of women’s health services, including preventive care such as PAP smears and breast exams, as well as reproductive health services like pre-pregnancy consultations, birth control, sexual health education, testing and treatment, and menstrual health support.
“Since moving to Northern Michigan four years ago, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the strength and connection of this tight-knit community. I’ve also seen firsthand the critical need for greater access to clinical services,” says Straub. “I look forward to offering a fresh perspective on expanding clinical care. My goal is to continue delivering essential health services to the people in our community who need them most.
” Her background includes specialized experience in rehabilitation and pain management from her time in the U.S. Navy emergency room, as well as compassionate end-of-life care through roles with Heartland Hospital, Advisacare, and McLaren Health Management Group in Petoskey. She has also supported the health needs of young adults through student health roles at Wayne State and Michigan State Universities. Straub remains committed to expanding access to thorough, compassionate care for clients at every stage of their lives.
